Restinga Recanto Restaurant

restinga recanto front

Situated in the nice location of Sambaqui, Restinga Recanto is a traditional seafood restaurant, noticeable for its decoration with dolls in the front.
They serve traditional dishes found in most seafood restaurants: fish prepared in many ways, shrimp in pumpkin, oysters and other seafood combinations.
The interior is rustic and widely decorated with local culture symbols. Built in a hill top, there is a good balcony with views to the northern bay waters. At night it is especially enchanting, with the lights of the continent shining in the background. Down the hill there is also a restaurant pier for incoming boats and waterside tables.

The table service is informal, without professional training, but the servers are quite friendly and willing to assist you.
I have tried the fish Linguado (common sole), the freshest one according to the waiter, and for accompaniment dishes rice, pirão, saute potatoes and salad. Unfortunately the food wasn’t as good as I expected: the fish missing flavour and regular side dishes. I spent over a R$100 and felt that the meal wasn’t worth it.

In overall Restinga is a nice looking and well located house with regular food, but a bit overpriced in the cost benefit analysis. Good place if you just want to have a drink - perhaps a beer - tasting local seafood appetizers with friends. Particularly at night, the scenery can provide good moments with your partner.

demolition at Sambaqui
Recently a series of properties demolitions have been carried out by Floram, a municipal entity responsible for inspecting and executing environment protection laws in the city. The properties were built illegally in permanent preservation areas.
The most recent one happened in Sambaqui, where a property was built right on the beach and only 5 metres from the sea. The owner was notified, received a fine and will have to recover the damaged area.
That is good news for people who care of the local environment and are worried about the fast and disorganized real state development in the region.

Pitangueiras Restaurant

Pitangueiras

Pitangueiras

Beside the calm waters of Ponta do Sambaqui, Pitangueiras is a typical seafood restaurant that enchant visitors with a wonderful view of the Northern bay. During the day it has a bucolic atmosphere and at night, the scenery of lights and Hercílio Luz bridge at the end, provides a romantic background.

The restaurant has 2 ambients: a house with few tables for rainy and windy days, and the popular deck, where the most requested tables are located.
I have been to the restaurat a couple of times and I like the meals. There is a good variety of fish dishes and other local specialities. In opinion the down side are the snack portions. Sometimes it is not prepared carefully and it doesn’t have a good presentation. The good news is that you can order half portion (half price) for all snacks, so you can taste it before risk ordering a large portion.
The prices are moderate. A fish dish accompanied with rice and salad for 2 people costs around R$50 or if you want a traditional shrimp dish it might cost you around R$ 70. They serve many seafood snacks to accompany your favorite drink, like squid (around R$ 14), shrimp (around R$ 20) and oysters (around R$ 14), just to name a few.

The staff is kind but not professionally trained to offer a high quality table service. The waiting time is also a problem if the restaurant is full, especially during high season.

Pitangueiras is a popular place for Happy Hour and tourists might also find the location fantastic, but an advice, just don’t expect a top end cuisine and service.
Anyway, the scenery might be able to distract you from little things.

Porto do Contrato

Saturday, September 15th, 2007

Ribeirão da Ilha is synonym of oyster. The farms are spread all over the area offering the mollusk to buy or to try in many different ways in the many different especialized restaurants you can find there. Porto do Contrato is a waterfront restaurant well designed to give you a fantastic view while you enjoy your food.

My first good impression was the staff, all dressed in white and welcoming. My second was the tables position, all separated between rocky collumns, giving you the privacy and a rustic feeling. Of course I have ordered oyster au gratin ( R$ 24 ) for entrée and those came in large size making me stop thinking about the main course. It had a little bit too much cream on it but in overall was delicious. The menu has classic seafood options of fish, shrimp, squid etc, prepared as standard and house suggestion. I had another good portion of crumbed shrimps ( R$ 22 ) to accompanny with my a beer and was satisfied at that time.

The place isn’t that big. It has a very nice interior with simple but effective decoration. If you don’t want to sit outside you can pick a bigger table inside.

This lovely restaurant is a great option to try out the local dishes while you enjoy the fantastic scenery of the southern bay. It is somehow distant from the busier scene of other parts of the island but take that as an asset.
