Chaos

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

Catastrophic is the situation of Santa Catarina State. The death toll will go over 100 and many cities are in state of emergency. The nearby city of Itajai, declared state of public calamity, is totally flooded and people are looting for food and driking water. People are breaking in supermarkets, pharmacies, stores and stealing all sorts of goods; even - hard to believe - TV sets ! When the order is fragile, the chaos gets in. Just like in war times.
Lula, our president, flew over the affected areas and was completely shocked.
I have no doubt that climate change has caused this horrible disaster. Specialists do agree that there is a connection and the world should be alert to this event. Maybe we are just experiencing the beginning of what is going to be hard times. Unfortunately, now there is no safe place.

Destruction

Monday, November 24th, 2008

If there was any doubt that things could get worse, the situation in Santa Catarina state today shows how climate change could destroy our cities. The constant rain reached the highest volume of rainfall and thousands of familes got their lives literally under the water. Florianopolis was badly affected and a huge landslide blocked the main access to the North of the island. Officials say that it could take a week to clear it out completely.
The body count of victims of this tragedy surpasses 50 in all state, hundeds of houses destroyed, power cut, federal and state roads closed due to landslides, water supply damage, extensive flood, just to give a glimpse of what the constant rain did.
This could be surely a sign of side effects of Global warming. Few years ago we had the Catarina cyclone, that luckly didn’t make landfall with its full power. Now, this crazy weather, raining for months, wetting the soil and bringing everything down. A sad lesson, but a lesson that things don’t happen only to the others; anyone could be a victim of the nature fury.

Raindrops

Saturday, November 22nd, 2008

Rain has been pouring since Thursday and is causing a lot of damage in Florianopolis and other cities in the region. Flooded roads, pavement damage, roads closed, landslides and fallen trees are among the happenings.
In fact, we had very few days with good weather since spring started in September. I could count on my fingers how many days I could actually see the sun.
This condition is unusual. I haven’t seen so many rainy days for so long. Spring is usually wet and windy but this year the weather is crazy. Could it be a consequence of Global warming ? Winter was also strange, warmer than it should be.
We are just a month to summer and I hope the sun will shine again for many days. Floripa is a sunny destination, or at least it should be.
