Porto do Contrato

Saturday, September 15th, 2007

Ribeirão da Ilha is synonym of oyster. The farms are spread all over the area offering the mollusk to buy or to try in many different ways in the many different especialized restaurants you can find there. Porto do Contrato is a waterfront restaurant well designed to give you a fantastic view while you enjoy your food.

My first good impression was the staff, all dressed in white and welcoming. My second was the tables position, all separated between rocky collumns, giving you the privacy and a rustic feeling. Of course I have ordered oyster au gratin ( R$ 24 ) for entrée and those came in large size making me stop thinking about the main course. It had a little bit too much cream on it but in overall was delicious. The menu has classic seafood options of fish, shrimp, squid etc, prepared as standard and house suggestion. I had another good portion of crumbed shrimps ( R$ 22 ) to accompanny with my a beer and was satisfied at that time.

The place isn’t that big. It has a very nice interior with simple but effective decoration. If you don’t want to sit outside you can pick a bigger table inside.

This lovely restaurant is a great option to try out the local dishes while you enjoy the fantastic scenery of the southern bay. It is somehow distant from the busier scene of other parts of the island but take that as an asset.

Caminho da Cruz

View of Daniela beach

Today was a warm and windy day, a typical september condition, just perfect for a nature hiking. I picked one I haven’t done before, the Caminho da Cruz, translating the Way of the Cross.

I believe there is a local difference between a trail ( trilha ) and a path ( caminho ). The path has been used usually to connect points where people can transit. The trails have been made without a real purpose other than create a way to somewhere.

The Caminho da Cruz is located between Jurerê and Praia do Forte going uphill and following the dividing ridge for about 1,5 km. It isn’t a hard walk, and you can have fantastic views of Daniela beach and the Northern bay once you reach the best outlook on a rocky platform.

Nature hiking is a popular activity in Floripa, a great and unexpensive way to exercise and enjoy the magic scenery all around. The search for this proximity reflects the negative effects of the turbulent way of life in the cities.
