Del Tomate Restaurant

Sunday, November 26th, 2006

If you like Italian and is not willing to spend more than R$ 50 for two people, Del Tomate is a good option for its convenient location combined with food at good prices. The Afonso Delambert Neto road is one of the most busy in Lagoa da Conceição centre, with many bars, cafes and restaurants on both sides. During high season you can barely walk along it.

The interior is simple and there might be nothing that will catch your attention but the open front gives it a different look allowing you to be part of the scene on the road.

You can choose the type of pasta you want (in individual portions or for two), with whatever type of sauce found in the menu. I was in two and we had Caneloni with Carbonara sauce ( R$ 14 ) , Tuna salad (R$ 8 ) and Fettuccini with Tomato sauce and shrimp (R$ 14 ) all in individual portions. A large Pizza costs about R$ 20 – R$ 26. The only down side is that the staff seems to be a bit unexperienced and made a mistake in my order twice.

Restaurants normally overprice their food like the next door Mexicano, but Del Tomate goes into another direction ofering the traditional pizza and pasta at good prices.

Lagoa Azul Restaurant

Wednesday, November 15th, 2006

It’s all so simple that one simply cannot help adoring this lovely waterfront restaurant located in Costa da Lagoa, a fishing comunity located in the Northwestern part of the Conceição Lagoon. There are many restaurants there but Lagoa azul is special for the fact it has a delicious homemade food combined with good prices and great location; and mouth to mouth has been good to Lagoa Azul.

It serves many types of fish and also the popular local dish, Sequencia de Camarão (shrimp sequence, R$31). I had Snook fish- first fried ( coated on breading) with shrimp sauce and then marinated cooked- all accompanied with rice, fried potatos and Pirão de peixe ( kind of paste made of manioc). The fish was fresh, well marinated and prepared with a home made care. This meal costs about R$ 25 ( portion for two people) so you can eat really well spending about R$ 60 in two, also having the shrimp sequence and drinks.

The staff is very friendly, not surprisingly a family restaurant. The owner serves the tables himself and coodinates the waiters.

The restaurant structure is simple reflecting its location: some tables inside, some under the trees and some on a wooden deck. The sound of water is the music and the vegetation is the decoration.

If you want to have a simple and genuine local cusine, prepared with care in a perfect place to chill, Lagoa Azul restaurant won’t disappoint you, at least I don’t know anyone that it did

Trip around the Lagoon

Boat trip
Sunday is a special day for me, especially when I go on a boat trip around the magic Conceição Lagoon.
The trip was provided by Dieter, the captain of Ondança boat. He runs tours in the lagoon, canal da barra and also to the nearby islands.
The weather was suspicious in the morning: a light rain pouring with some clearings in the clouds, but during spring don’t trust what you see.
We embarked around 10:00 am on a pier located at the end of Rendeiras avenue. We started exploring the canal da barra, where the lagoon connects with the sea, an interesting tour where you see waterfront houses, typical vegetation, birds and fishermen communities doing their work.
Out of the canal we headed to Costa da Lagoa, another community located in the Northwestern part of the lagoon, popular for the waterfront seafood restaurants. At this time the weather has changed in to a fantastic bright suny day. The hills covered with Atlantic forest and the Guarapuvu trees with blooming flowers make a fantastic scenery. We reached our first stop, the Lagoa Azul restaurant, around 13:00 and while our lunch was being cooked we visited a local waterfall - which unfortunately was dry because of the recent low rainfall - and also climbed up to an outlook to see the lagoon from another perspective.
The lunch, included in the tour, was delicious and we spent the time having good conversation until we decided to go to the last part of the tour, the northern part of the lagoon where is located a sand strip called Saquinho. We stopped there for a while having drinks and chatting. The friendly atmosphere of the boat was the special ingredient that made the trip so pleasant. After that we departed to Rio Vermelho river mouth, enjoying the beautiful nature around us. Dieter and Annemarie, owners of Ondança, have an immense respect for the nature and care about preservation, aspects that reflect the way the tours are conducted.
And then around 16:30 we navigated back to Rendeiras avenue to end our trip. The sun, the colors, the wind, everything was perfect in this lovely Sunday late afternoon.
Ondança has many types of tours and also charters for groups. For more information please visit the website www.ondanca.com .
