Regarded as one of the best pizza in Florianópolis, Basílico is a popular restaurant in Canto da Lagoa that offers the rounds prepared with good quality ingredients, following the tradition of pizzarias in São Paulo city. The menu presents the basic toppings as well as its own creations, like the popular Caprese - thick tomatoes slices topped with buffalo mozzarella, basil leaves and black olives pesto.
The ambiance is good, with low-key lighting and sparse decoration. There is a mix of brick and wood so it gives a general cozy feeling. There are tables inside the house and also in the pleasant covered yard.
The table service is formal and the servers are ready to get the pizza slices in your plate.
Prices are quite expensive if compared to the average pizzarias. A large pizza costs around R$ 50 and it has 8 slices.
I wanted to eat a good pizza with my wife and my choice was Basílico this time. To start, I tried a Primo Basílio salad - arugula leaves topped with large tomatos slices, pieces of artichoke heart, dried tomatoes and buffalo mozzarella. After that I had a large pizza with 3 different toppings. The crust was thin and the flavours were delicious.
In overall pizzaria Basílico is a great place to share with friends and family or to take your partner for a good dine out. It delivers an excellent and authentic Brazilian pizza but there are also some other good options in Floripa that can do the same for less price.

Jurerê international beach
High season is on and people are enjoying the sun, sand and sea. Most of the beaches are crowded and the expectations for this season are good. Last year, the rain forced visitors to cancel the trip but this summer the amount of rain has been better distributed along the days so the hotels occupancy rate is high. Most of the days have been partially cloud this month but it doesn’t hinder people to go to the beach.
As the amount of people rises considerably during summer, the same happens with the garbage found on the beaches. It is a shame that people simply throw bottles, plastic bags, cigar buts, and all sorts of micro garbage on the sand. There are garbage bins and people could just put it in a bag and take home but lack of environmental awareness among the majority seems to be a cruel reality.
Recently I saw a documentary about the amount of plastic that is found in the ocean and even the existence of a large concentration of plastic debris known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. The plastic doesn’t biodegrade but disintegrates into even smaller pieces, becoming a real threat to marine life. Sea turtles mistake plastic bags for jelly fish, their favorite food, and after eating it, get their digestive system clogged up. Scientists have also found an impressive amount of plastic in the stomach of examined seabirds.
So think before you get rid of plastic in the beach. A small bag or bottle may look inoffensive but when tons of material are out there, the damage on earth is certainly made.

Beira Mar Avenue Fireworks
Floripa has entered 2010 with many celebrations around the island. Beira Mar avenue had the traditional fireworks, and crowds, most of them dressed in traditional white, gathered at the most popular beaches.
I welcomed the New Year at Jurerê beach. The fireworks there were quite impressive and the popular beach clubs Taikô, El Divino beach, P12 and Cafe de La Musique were packed, playing good eletronic music and had among the guests many famous people.
Unfortunately, walking along the beach, I could see bottles, cans and garbage spread all over the sand and also in the sea. Visible drunk people tossed the garbage anywhere without any concern or respect for the beach. The public cleaning started early in the morning but despite the effort it is impossible to collect all trash. The damage on the environment is visible.
I wish for 2010 more concern on the environmental problems we are facing and more action to reduce the impact we are making on earth resources. Everyone hears and see about it but little is done.
I hope for one day to celebrate New Year and see at least the Champagne bottles and beer cans on its right place, the garbage bins.
